Cooking Steps
Step 1: To begin making the Sweet Potato Dal recipe, wash masoor dal with water and soak in water for about an hour
Step 2: In a pressure cooker, add dal, a cup of water and pressure cook for about 2 whistles
Step 3: Set aside
Step 4: In a non-stick pan, add oil and heat over medium flame
Step 5: Add cumin seeds to the oil and wait till the seeds splutter
Step 6: Now, add green chilies and garlic
Step 7: Fry until the garlic becomes brownish
Step 8: Gently add sliced onions and fry till they are translucent
Step 9: Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become mushy
Step 10: Now, add the mentioned spice powders and combine them well
Step 11: Add potato pieces and stir them until the spices are blended evenly with the potato
Step 12: Add water and cook on high flame until the potato pieces are cooked well
Step 13: Add the cooked dal to the pan
Step 14: Adjust water according to your required consistency
Step 15: Season it with salt
Step 16: Reduce the flame and cook on medium flame for about 5 minutes, until the dal are blended with potatoes and spices
Step 17: Switch off the flame and set asideIn a small pan, add oil
Step 18: Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds followed by urad dal and cumin seeds
Step 19: Let the mustard seeds sizzle and cumin seeds turn brownish
Step 20: Add the tempered oil to the dal and give a stir
Step 21: Garnish with coriander leaves
Step 22: Prepare this Sweet Potato Dal and serve with steamed rice with a dollop of ghee or jeera rice and Kachumber Salad for a simple and comforting weekday meal
