Preparation
Rinse the Dal: Wash the green moong dal thoroughly under running water 2-3 times to remove any dirt or impurities.
Soak the Dal: Place the rinsed dal in a large bowl and add enough water to cover it completely. Let it soak for 8-12 hours or overnight. The beans will swell and double in size after soaking.
Cooking Steps
Drain the Water:
- After soaking, drain all the water from the dal using a colander or sieve.
- Rinse the soaked dal once more under fresh water to ensure cleanliness.
Wrap for Sprouting:
- Place the soaked and drained dal in a clean, damp muslin cloth, cotton cloth, or sprouting container.
- Tie the cloth loosely or cover it to allow air circulation. Ensure the cloth remains damp but not overly wet.
Store in a Warm Place:
- Keep the wrapped dal in a warm, dark place (e.g., inside a cupboard or on the kitchen counter) for 12-24 hours. Check periodically to ensure the cloth remains damp. Sprinkle a little water if it starts drying out.
Check for Sprouts:
- After 12-24 hours, you’ll see small white sprouts emerging from the dal. If you prefer longer sprouts, let them sit for another 8-12 hours, ensuring the cloth remains damp.
Rinse and Store:
- Once the sprouts are ready, rinse them thoroughly under clean water to remove any odor or residue.
- Store the sprouts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
